Quizzes and grading

A quiz is a lesson type. You build a pool of questions, and each time a student takes the quiz, Cedarras draws a set from that pool. Quizzes can be required or optional, and graded or not.

Create a quiz

On a course's Content tab, use Add lesson inside a section, or Add top-level lesson. Give it a Lesson title, choose Quiz as the Lesson type, and click Create lesson. The lesson editor opens.

Like every lesson, a new quiz starts hidden. Tick Visible to students when it's ready. The lesson type can't be changed later.

Questions and the pool

Under Questions, click Add question for each one. Every question has a Type:

  • Single choice: one correct answer. Add at least two choices and select the correct one.
  • Multiple choice: one or more correct answers. Tick every correct one. A student gets the question right only if they pick exactly the correct set.
  • True / false: the choices are True and False; select the correct one.

Each question can have an Explanation (optional). Students see it after they submit.

All your questions together are the quiz's pool. Questions per attempt sets how many are drawn at random each time. Leave it blank to use every question. If you enter more than the pool holds, students get the whole pool.

Click Save lesson to save the settings and the questions together. Students can't start a quiz with no questions.

Required or optional

Under Quiz settings, tick Required if students must take the quiz.

  • A required quiz counts toward course completion. It counts as done once the student submits an attempt, whatever the score.
  • An optional quiz doesn't count toward completion or the progress percent at all. Students can still take it.

Quizzes have no Mark complete button. Submitting is what counts.

Graded or not

Tick Graded if the quiz's score should count toward the student's course grade. A course has grades only if at least one of its quizzes is graded.

A student's course grade is the average of their best score on each visible graded quiz:

  • Only their best attempt on each quiz counts.
  • A required graded quiz they haven't taken counts as 0%.
  • An optional graded quiz they haven't taken is left out.
  • Hidden quizzes never count.

Students see their grade on the course page and on their course list. Turning Required or Graded on or off updates every student's progress and grade.

Whether you can turn on grading depends on your plan. If you change to a plan without it, quizzes that are already graded keep grading, and you can always turn grading off.

What students see

A student clicks Start quiz, answers, and clicks Submit answers. Each attempt is a fresh random draw from the pool. If they leave partway through and come back, they pick up the same questions.

After submitting, they see their score and every question, with their answer, the correct answer and your explanation. They can Retake quiz as many times as they like. A graded quiz tells them their best score is the one that counts.

In Preview as student you can see a sample draw, but you can't submit.

Editing a quiz after students take it

Each attempt keeps its own copy of the questions it showed. If you edit, add or remove questions later, past attempts and their scores don't change. New attempts draw from the updated pool.

Quiz results

A course's Analytics tab has a Quiz results section, if your plan includes analytics. For each quiz it shows how many students took it and how many attempts there were. It's updated every hour.

Once at least 5 students have taken a quiz, it also shows the average best score, the average first attempt, and for each question how often it was shown, answered correctly and missed. Below 5, those stay hidden so they can never reveal one student's answers.
