Offer a free preview with demo mode

Demo mode lets you give people a free taste of a paid course, then sell them the rest. A second Kit tag, a demo tag, puts someone in the same course, with only the lessons you choose.

Set it up

  1. On the course's Details tab, under Demo tags, add a Kit tag. Your Full course tags are unchanged and are still required.
  2. On each lesson you want to give away, set Demo mode to In the demo. On a section, Put every lesson in the demo does it for all its lessons at once.
  3. Write a closing lesson that sells the full course and set its Demo mode to Demo only. Full students never see it.
  4. Optionally, set the course's Upgrade link, where people go to buy. It becomes the Get the full course button on the lessons a demo student can't open.

What a demo student sees

  • The whole outline, with every title, held to your other rules. A hidden lesson stays hidden, and a timed or tag-locked lesson shows its own placeholder.
  • The lessons marked In the demo work exactly as for any student.
  • Any other lesson shows its title with a Full course badge. Opening it shows a short note and your upgrade button, with no content, resources or quiz.
  • The Demo only lesson, wherever you put it.
  • Students see the word Preview; you see Demo.

Upgrading

When the full tag is added in Kit, for example after a purchase, the same person becomes a full student on the same enrollment. Completed lessons are kept, and Cedarras sends a short email saying they now have the full course. If the full tag is later removed and the demo tag is still there, they go back to the preview, with no email.

Progress and grades

  • Progress counts against the full course, so a demo student who finishes every demo lesson might show 20%. They can't finish the course or get a certificate.
  • The Demo only lesson never counts toward anyone's progress.
  • A graded quiz a demo student can't open counts as 0 in their grade.

Kit automations and analytics

On the Rules tab, A demo student completes the demo adds a Kit tag when a demo student finishes every demo lesson that is open to them, a good moment to send your offer. Like other rules it only applies to completions after you create it, and it needs the plan feature that sends progress to Kit. Analytics shows demo and full students separately, and how many demo students upgraded.

Plans

Demo mode is on the plans that include it; the Plans page shows which. If your account moves to a plan without it, demo students lose access until you upgrade again (their progress is kept), while full students are not affected. Choosing In the demo, Demo only and the upgrade link need no plan feature, but they do nothing without a demo tag.
